H-E-B has shared plans to open two Joe V’s Smart Shop by H-E-B stores in Dallas, the first locations the retailer will open outside the Houston area.

H-E-B will build a Joe V’s Smart Shop at 4101 W. Wheatland Road. The other location is planned at 5204 S. Buckner Blvd. The Wheatland store is expected to open in late summer 2024 and the Buckner store will open in spring 2025.

Additional details for each store will be shared at its respective groundbreaking ceremony, which will be announced soon.

Joe V’s Smart Shop is an H-E-B brand that offers a price-conscious shopping experience and provides customers with popular H-E-B items, such as bakery tortillas, sushiya sushi made in-house daily, Meal Simple chef-inspired meals, fresh-cut fruit, organic selection, fresh in-store baked breads and pastries and fresh in-store cut meat.

Joe V’s Smart Shop launched in 2010 and employs more than 1,500 people across nine stores in the Houston area.

“With the introduction of Joe V’s Smart Shop to Dallas, we are excited to build on our longstanding presence in the area and commitment to serve more customers in this dynamic and growing part of Texas,” Roxanne Orsak, H-E-B chief operating officer, said in a statement.

As a multi-format retailer, H-E-B operates Central Market stores across Texas, as well as Mi Tienda stores in the Houston area. H-E-B also operates Favor Delivery, an on-demand delivery service that serves hundreds of communities throughout the state.

H-E-B opened stores in Plano and Frisco last year and will open stores in McKinney, Allen, Alliance and Mansfield, which are under construction.

Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons Cos., along with the Albertsons Cos. Foundation, observed June 6 as “Nourishing Neighbors Day.”

To commemorate the occasion, the foundation announced the recipients of three multiyear Nourishing Neighbors spark grants totaling $9 million to nonprofits that are spearheading programs designed to create long-term solutions for moving people out of food insecurity.

“Our grocery stores, including Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Shaw’s, Jewel-Osco and Tom Thumb, have a long-standing history of donating money, fresh food and pantry staples to area food banks, soup kitchens, community fridges and more to help ensure our neighbors in need have access to a nutritious meal,” said Susan Morris, chief operations officer for Albertsons Cos. and board chair for its foundation.

“While regular food distribution is an important and critical part of addressing hunger, we developed these grants so we can advance our efforts further by supporting organizations that are at the forefront of empowering individuals and families to achieve lasting food security.”

The following nonprofits were selected by Albertsons for one of the $3 million grants:

  • Share our Strength works to end hunger and poverty through its No Kid Hungry campaign and other programs. With the Nourishing Neighbors grant, it will design and fund a program to help single mothers break the cycle of poverty through career coaching, stipends for food, housing and childcare, counseling support and tax services.
  • United Way Bay Area mobilizes a network of community partners to respond to food insecurity by collaborating across sectors including nonprofits and government agencies to address both short-term essential human needs and advocate for long-term systemic changes. The Nourishing Neighbors grant will fund a pilot program with 100 low-income families in Alameda County by 2027. Families will receive customized financial coaching and monthly stipends as part of an immersive and innovative community-based program to help the most marginalized communities break through the cycle of poverty and hunger.
  • FIND Food Bank is a regional food bank in Southern California feeding an average of 150,000 people each month through its network of 150 distribution sites and more than 80 community-based partners. The food bank will use its grant to create a program that addresses food insecurity and its root causes to end hunger.

“By declaring June 6 as Nourishing Neighbors Day, our goal is to raise continued awareness and support for Americans who continually struggle with where their next meal is coming from,” said Christy Duncan Anderson, president and executive director for the foundation. “Thanks to the incredible generosity of our customers, the Nourishing Neighbors program is able to help millions of people gain access to a nutritious meal.”

Nourishing Neighbors debuted a PSA campaign last month to inspire communities to learn how they can get involved and help millions of Americans who are food insecure. The campaign, which emphasizes that “everyone should be welcome at the table,” appears nationally across media platforms including TV, radio, digital, print and a Times Square digital billboard in New York City.

Salisbury, North Carolina-based Food Lion Feeds has launched its fourth annual “Summers Without Hunger” campaign, which aims to address food insecurity by helping to provide 16 million meals this summer.

Through the campaign, which runs through June 27, customers have the opportunity to make a difference by making a $5 cash donation at checkout in-store or online through Food Lion To Go.

All donations will be matched by 10 Food Lion suppliers: Campbell’s, Coca-Cola, Frito Lay, Gatorade, General Mills, Kellogg’s, Kraft Heinz, Mondelez, Pepsi Beverages and Unilever, doubling the impact, up to $1 million.

According to Feeding America, an estimated 32 million meals are needed to help children and families during the summer months. The “Summers Without Hunger” campaign helps provide access to meals to those facing hunger in partnership with Feeding America and the 33 local partner food banks throughout Food Lion’s 10-state operating area.

“Children and their families often experience hunger during the summer when schools are closed and meals are not provided,” said Kevin Durkee, manager.

“At Food Lion, nourishing our neighbors and addressing food insecurity is at the core of everything we do in the towns and cities we serve. We sincerely appreciate our vendors and customers for partnering with us to ensure we provide nourishment and make a difference in the lives of young children.”

Since the Food Lion Feeds’ “Summers Without Hunger” campaign began in 2020, customers have helped to provide about 40 million meals to neighbors facing hunger.

In addition to customers’, suppliers’ and Food Lion’s donations, employees will also volunteer throughout the month at several local Feeding America partner food banks to help distribute food.

Through Food Lion Feeds, Food Lion has helped to provide more than 1 billion meals to people since 2014 and has committed to donating 1.5 billion meals by 2025.

The Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give will feature more than a dozen local diverse-owned restaurants at J. Brewer’s, a premium hospitality experience on the fourth fairway of Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan.

Throughout tournament week on June 15-18, Meijer will collaborate with local, diverse-owned food and beverage restaurants and vendors to supply experiences for spectators.

“Our purpose at Meijer is to enrich lives in the communities we serve, and we believe supplier diversity plays a vital role,” said Carla Hendon, director of supplier diversity and indirect procurement.

“By partnering with diverse restaurants at the Meijer LPGA Classic, we aren’t just supporting their founders, we’re intentionally helping to grow their communities with the thousands of spectators who attend the tournament.”

Food and beverage offerings will include Tuscan Mediterranean salad, jerk chicken puffs and specialty items from Soldadera Coffee, Rani Indian Catering and Pochi’s Sweet Designs. Restaurants new to J. Brewer’s in 2023 include Irie Kitchen, Monsoon and Tacos El Cunado. For a full list of restaurant partners, click here.

In addition to the diverse food and beverage offerings, the Meijer LPGA Classic is excited to welcome the John Shippen National Women’s Golf Invitational champion as a sponsor exemption into the 2023 tournament. That event will also be held at Blythefield Country Club on June 6-7 and is named for the first Black professional golfer in the U.S.

“We’re excited to welcome back so many diverse-owned restaurants to this year’s tournament – and invite new ones – to partner with us to share their wonderful menus and expand upon the traditional offerings typically seen at golf events,” said Cathy Cooper, executive director.

The 2023 Meijer LPGA Classic will host a field of 144 of the best female golfers for 72 holes of stroke play over four days of competition. Proceeds from the tournament – and each of the week’s festivities – will benefit the Meijer Simply Give program that feeds families by restocking the shelves of food pantries across the Midwest.

The 2022 tournament raised $1.25 million for local food pantries. In total, the eight tournaments combined have generated more than $8.65 million for the hunger relief program. Additionally, Meijer also donated $25,000 to a hunger relief organization of tournament champion Jennifer Kupcho’s choice. She selected Grand Rapids-based Kids’ Food Basket as a thank you to her host family, who had ties to the organization.

Nashville, Tennessee-based OrderInsite, a technology platform for pharmacies to manage, monitor and master their prescription drug inventory, is helping Lakeland, Florida-based Publix pharmacies prepare for hurricane season.

OrderInsite’s automated technology will help the grocer implement an action plan at a corporate level so pharmacies in the impacted regions can focus on customers. It’s important for pharmacies to have the necessary medications available in advance of customers starting their hurricane preparations.

This technology provides predictive analytics, quick adjustments for re-ordering and drug forecasting so Publix knows which prescription medications to fast-track to which stores. It also allows Publix to update the action plan in real time if a storm changes its path.

“We are happy to support Publix and provide a customized solution that allows its pharmacists to prepare ahead of a natural disaster like a hurricane,” said George Lazenby, CEO of OrderInsite.

“It’s important that Publix customers have access to their medications when they need them and it’s rewarding to be a part of their overall plan so communities are better prepared for the unknown.”

Publix operates more than 1,200 pharmacies across seven states in the Southeast that are impacted during hurricane season.

“We are always striving to provide the best quality service to our customers and that means being prepared for extreme weather events like a hurricane,” said Dain Rusk, Publix VP of pharmacy.

“OrderInsite’s expertise and support help our pharmacies be well-equipped to navigate these unpredicted challenges. Their advanced systems allow us to make informed decisions quickly prioritizing the necessary prescription drugs that our customers need.”

New doughnut flavors will be arriving to bakery cases in time for National Donut Day on June 2, as Bashas’ names the winners of its annual doughnut contest.

The winners of this year’s contest are a 15-year-old from Apache Junction, an adult from Maricopa and a Bashas’ employee.

As part of its annual competition, Bashas’ invited kids and grownups across the state to create new flavors for its doughnut cases. A panel of local celebrity judges helped Bashas’ to select the winning flavors.

Payton R., a 15-year-old from Apache Junction, submitted the winning doughnut in the kids’ category. The Lemon Coconut Meringue doughnut is glazed filled with lemon coconut meringue, and topped with dried lemons and toasted coconut shreds.

Sara Williams from the city of Maricopa submitted the winning doughnut in the adult category. Her PB&J entry is a glazed one filled with strawberry and topped with peanut-butter-flavored frosting.

Sheri Holland, a Bashas’ employee from Flagstaff, Arizona, submitted the winning doughnut in the grocer’s internal company contest. Her Banana Cream Pie is a white doughnut filled with banana custard and topped with buttercream and graham crackers.

The three winning items are available for purchase in Bashas’ bakery cases across Arizona. When customers purchase a dozen doughnuts at Bashas’ on June 2, they will receive an additional six ones for free.

Bashas’ will also donate 10 percent of its sales on June 2 to The Salvation Army, which established National Doughnut Day in June 1938 to honor volunteers who served the sweet treats to soldiers on the frontlines.

In addition to being named Bashas’ Official Doughnut Ambassadors for 2023, each winner will receive one dozen doughnuts every month for a year from Bashas’ bakery and $500 worth of prizes, including a Bashas’ gift card and baking/cooking gadgets.

The youth category runner-up is 8-year-old Wesley W. from Gilbert, who will receive a $50 Bashas’ gift card for his BPM doughnut, which was filled with banana cream and topped with peanut butter frosting and maple drizzle.
